Cut Out Sugar Cookies with Cream Cheese Icing

This is a great cut out sugar cookie recipe that actually tastes delicious. They are great on their own but amazing with the cream cheese icing.

Ingredients for Cookies

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Directions for Cookies

  • Cream butter and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer.
  • Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl while butter and sugar are combining.
  • Add egg and vanilla to butter sugar mixture until combined. Slowly add the dry ingredients until fully incorporated.
  • Turn dough onto plastic wrap and refrigerated for an hour.
  • Once chilled preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Lightly flour counter and roll dough out to 1/4 – 1/2 inch thick and cut with desired cookie cutters.
  • Place on parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes.
  • While cookies are cooling make the icing.

Ingredients for Icing

  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 2 1/2 cups of powdered sugar

Directions for Icing

  • Cream room temperature butter and cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer.
  • Add vanilla and lemon juice and mix until incorporated.
  • Add powdered sugar and mix on low speed until loosely combined.
  • Increase mixing speed to medium and mix for 5 minutes.
  • Decorate cookies as desired.
